Absolute Versus Relative Targets
Absolute Target an absolute target is
a percentage reduction of the total energy used at a site.
Therefore if a site used 50,000kWh of energy per year and
their target was a 10% reduction over 10 years, by 2010 that
site's energy consumption should then only be 45,000kWh. This
does not allow for an increase in production or change in
product mix.
Relative Target, a relative target is
a percentage reduction of the total energy used divided by
a unit output of that site. Therefore if a site used 50,000kWh
of energy per year and the total production was 100 Tonnes,
the kWh/output would be 500kWh per tonne of output. If their
target was a 10% reduction over 10 years, by 2010 that site's
kWh/output should then only be 450kWh per tonne of output.
This method would then allow for changes in production or
output.
Different companies within a sector agreement
can choose between absolute and relative targets, this can
go one step further in that each site within that company
that is part of the sector agreement can opt between absolute
and relative targets.
